(ENGLISH) Love and Monsters is one of those films that does not seem to want to change cinema, and perhaps that is why it works so well. It has a simple premise, a light tone, well-designed monsters, a likable protagonist and a post-apocalyptic adventure that is very easy to enjoy. It is not deep or especially original, but it is very entertaining, and that is not a small thing. The story has something classic about it: a normal guy, rather clumsy and not very prepared for survival, leaves his underground shelter to cross a world full of huge and dangerous creatures. The romantic motivation is there, yes, but the film works better as a journey of growth than as a love story. What matters is not so much reaching the girl as discovering that the protagonist may be more capable than he believes. Dylan O’Brien carries the film very well. He has charisma, conveys vulnerability without becoming annoying, and makes Joel clumsy, scared and kind without turning him into an idiot. That is essential, because an adventure like this needs you to like the person who is going through it. The film also gets its supporting characters right, especially in the sections with Michael Rooker and Ariana Greenblatt, who give it the feeling of a small community of survivors with more world behind it than we actually see. The monsters are another of its great strengths. They do not feel like simple digital obstacles placed there to fill action scenes. They have design, personality and variety. Some are disgusting, some are imposing, and some even have a strange tenderness to them. You can feel that the film enjoys imagining this world after disaster, and that is exactly where the sense appears that this could have been the beginning of something bigger. It also helps that Love and Monsters does not take itself too seriously. It has humor, pace, adventure and a kind of innocence that recalls certain youth adventures from the 80s and 90s, but without feeling like a blatant copy. It is a kind film inside the apocalypse, with danger but without cynicism, with monsters but also with heart. And that mixture suits it very well. Not everything is perfect. Some situations are predictable, the script does not take many risks, and the world it presents could perhaps have supported a more ambitious story. But as entertainment, it almost always works. It is light, charming, visually appealing and leaves you wanting to explore that universe further. One of those films that, without making much noise, leaves you thinking: “I would have watched a sequel.”
